Sweet Home has turned into a popular phrase used in many households, though originally Home Sweet Home was a song from the opera Clari, or the Maid of Milan which was first performed at Covent Garden, London in 1823.
The lyrics were written by American actor and playwright John Howard Payne (1791-1852).
In 1909, it was featured in the silent film The House of Cards
Popularized during the late 19th century it became an anthem for soldiers during the American Civil War. The song was reputedly banned from being played in Union Army camps during the American Civil War for being too redolent of hearth and home and so likely to incite desertion.
The song has played a role in many movies/ plays since and is even known in Japan as “Hanyū no Yado”
